Unmasking the Emerging Generation: Key Clues to Youth Strategies
Dr. Reginald Bibby, Research Chair, Dept. of Sociology, University of Lethbridge

Reginald Bibby draws on his unparalleled national surveys of Canadian young people and adults spanning the mid-70s to the present to identify six major ways in which life has been changing, and four important areas where things are staying much the same. Major shifts, for example, have included a movement from an outlook of dominance to diversity, from an emphasis on ‘we’ to an emphasis on ‘me’, from valuing deference to valuing discernment, from knowing too little to knowing too much. At the same time, there has been little change in the importance given to family, civility, and the central things people want from life.

Overall, younger people are drawing selectively from the past and showing the potential to experience an enhanced quality of life to that of their parents and grandparents. These trends have major implications for organizations that are effective in relating to younger Canadians – including, of course, credit unions.

Plenary Session – Help for the Homeless
Hannah Taylor, Winnipeg, Manitoba, The LadyBug Foundation

Braced with the simple truth “everybody should have a home” Hannah Taylor is Canada’s youngest advocate for this country’s homeless community. By all accounts Hannah is a regular little girl who loves to go to school, sings, reads, rides horses, and loves all that the outdoors has to offer … especially bugs. But at age five her life took a dramatic turn as one cold winter day Hannah saw a man eating from a garbage can and her great gift of mercy and compassion took hold of her heart.

Her influence to motivate others into action and desire to educate individuals about the homeless is why Hannah Taylor is the founder of The Ladybug Foundation. The Ladybug Foundation Inc. supports Hannah’s efforts to spread awareness and raise funds to assist operating charitable organizations. These organizations provide food, shelter, and other needs of the homeless and near homeless in Canada without judgment, so they can find dignity, security, hope and refuge.

You won’t want to miss hearing Hannah speak about her passion – bring a Toonie to help the homeless!

They are inside your credit union, your employees and your marketplace! Passion, confidence and vision will move credit unions forward in their youth strategies and initiatives.
