Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. They
are our future! Credit unions need to recognize the
importance of a youth strategy for what it really is:
an investment in the future of the credit union. Much
can be accomplished by credit unions and Centrals working
together towards a common goal.
What is the right culture? How does relationship management
play a critical part in developing long term relationships
with young people? Who should credit unions partner
with? By recognizing and knowing needs, sharing resources
and providing relevant products and services for youth
during each of their life stages, credit unions can
begin to tap into this burgeoning market.
Learn about the strategic framework and recommendations
that SaskCentral and Saskatchewan credit unions have
developed and their comprehensive approach to attracting
and retaining youth as members/customers, employees
and volunteers. Learn how they are putting their strategic
framework into action!

Why it
Matters – Mentorship and Hip Hop Culture
Michelle Dagnino, MA, LLB, Social Justice Advocate,
Author, Lawyer, Consultant, Speaker
As pop culture trends become the common language
amongst youth, we need to develop fresh ideas,
forge new partnerships and design strategies to
engage youth on a meaningful level, both in their
workplaces and communities. Through engaging youth
on their terms we can learn to involve youth as
valued members in the decision making process
to make credit unions, workplaces and neighborhoods
forums for creativity and innovation. Through
funny insights, and discussions of mentorship,
diversity and – hip hop! - this workshop
delves into the lives of youth and teaches us
how to reach young people through issues that
are relevant to their lives.

Unmasking
the Emerging Generation: Key Clues to Youth Strategies
Dr. Reginald Bibby, Research Chair, Dept. of Sociology,
University of Lethbridge
Reginald Bibby draws on his unparalleled national
surveys of Canadian young people and adults spanning
the mid-70s to the present to identify six major
ways in which life has been changing, and four
important areas where things are staying much
the same. Major shifts, for example, have included
a movement from an outlook of dominance to diversity,
from an emphasis on ‘we’ to an emphasis
on ‘me’, from valuing deference to
valuing discernment, from knowing too little to
knowing too much. At the same time, there has
been little change in the importance given to
family, civility, and the central things people
want from life.
Overall, younger people are drawing selectively
from the past and showing the potential to experience
an enhanced quality of life to that of their parents
and grandparents. These trends have major implications
for organizations that are effective in relating
to younger Canadians – including, of course,
credit unions.

Plenary Session – Help
for the Homeless
Hannah Taylor, Winnipeg, Manitoba, The LadyBug Foundation
Braced with the simple truth “everybody should
have a home” Hannah Taylor is Canada’s youngest
advocate for this country’s homeless community.
By all accounts Hannah is a regular little girl who
loves to go to school, sings, reads, rides horses, and
loves all that the outdoors has to offer … especially
bugs. But at age five her life took a dramatic turn
as one cold winter day Hannah saw a man eating from
a garbage can and her great gift of mercy and compassion
took hold of her heart.
Her influence to motivate others into action and desire
to educate individuals about the homeless is why Hannah
Taylor is the founder of The Ladybug Foundation. The
Ladybug Foundation Inc. supports Hannah’s efforts
to spread awareness and raise funds to assist operating
charitable organizations. These organizations provide
food, shelter, and other needs of the homeless and near
homeless in Canada without judgment, so they can find
dignity, security, hope and refuge.
You won’t want to miss hearing Hannah speak about
her passion – bring a Toonie to help the homeless!

Key Note – Case
Closed - Mystery Solved! – The Answers are Still
in the Box
Dan Clark, CEO and Best-Selling Author and Master Inspirator
We’re told to think outside the lines, to think
outside the box. What if the answers are still in the
box? Most people think that the answers to today’s
challenges are found outside themselves, instead of within.
Dan Clark thinks it’s tough to get right answers
from wrong questions in order to take it to the next
level. Answers to the right questions are already inside
the credit union system. They are inside your credit
union, your employees and your marketplace! Passion,
confidence and vision will move credit unions forward
in their youth strategies and initiatives.
This presentation and the investigative journey over
the last two days will set the stage for credit unions
to look inwards for solutions and take action. By developing
their own youth strategy and all working towards a common
goal….it really becomes an investment in the future
of the system.
